there are pictures coming soon on the new radio site, but we've made new radio shirts and hoodies, many of which are already gone because i didn't bother to ask around and see if anyone wanted 'em! looks like we're making more, so i wanna know in advance if y'all want anything.

here's the deal:

there are two styles, both available as shirt or hoodie.

a) 2 ROWDY KREW, in fat, hand-written letters on the front. new radio letters and logo printed small on the back

b) THE NEW RADIO, our trademark letters written across the breast on the front. new radio logo printed small on the back.

these are only available as black garments with white print. don't get mad.

it's all done, y'all. copies of *the last island* arrived a couple weeks ago and i've spent the last couple weeks sending out 304 preview copies--269 to u.s. stores and 35 to stores overseas. jad and i called the american stores one by one to verify the contact name and the address and we spent another solid day pulling new stores out of thin air by searching for comic shops by zip code on yellowpages.com. we signed a letter to accompany each book and each book went out in a fancy custom envelope which i designed and drew.

that oughtta get their attention.

8:35 pm
so i finished *the last island* last week. after nine straight months of working virtually every day anywhere from 2-9 hours, i was a little unsure of what to do with myself. the day after i finished, i woke up and i actually felt different, emotionally and even physically.

i've been doing my best to take it easy. i've been letting myself seize opportunities i'm in the habit of refusing--driving around with jad, tagging along on his errands, watching movies with sorren and not simultaneously drawing, answering every phone call. mostly in taking it easy i've been making time to DO nothing. my favorite thing to do right now is burn incense, listen to music and lie on the bed. i bought an obscenely comfortable futon bed in june, and i've been barely been in it but to sleep for four months. now i laze in it, think in it, phonecall in it, write in it--everything.

until the last week of my life, i had honestly forgotten how soothing it is to take a break, and i am very much enjoying taking nothing seriously. but there's a catch, and i know it; my relaxation is part of an agreement with myself, and eventually i gotta honor that agreement.

i can tell that i've changed since san diego. i think i've always gotten completely into things i enjoyed, particularly comics, and other things or people in my life have always suffered as a result. but in the years when we all lived together in san diego, i would take an adventure, a ride, a movie or a conversation with a friend before i would work on my artistic ideas. they never manifested; they never got done. they were always just ideas.

some time after moving up here, some time after starting art school, this changed and i became afraid. resolving to take my art seriously meant being afraid not to make it as an artist, and becoming attached enough to my work to get it done meant being attached enough to my work to take its fate and its acceptance personally. this continues to motivate me. for better or for worse, i work from a terror of oblivion. i work to succeed, and if i ever succeed i'll work to maintain my success. art is ego, but i've accepted this, and i believe a well-policed ego is a fit vehicle for delivering worthwhile and beautiful ideas.

this is my art life, and this is why even now in relaxing i fear doubt creeping on me. the agreement with myself i have to honor is never to sit idle so long that doubt can immobilize me. my own motion, my own aggressive pursuit of success is what makes success seem feasible; it's what makes my own inflated estimation of myself seem realistic and irrefutable.

jad's finished the first part of the book we're doing together, and whether i like it or not, i'm starting the pages on the first of the month--which means i gotta cram in as much taking it easy as possible between now and then, 'cause i have no idea how long this project will take.

so at the stumptown comics fest tomorrow, i'm going head-to-head against some other dudes in a big comic art battle! one of the dudes used to draw a comic i read in high school.

it's lookin' to be a fun day. gonna hang with jad and sorren at our booth and sell comics for eight hours; gonna battle it out with everyone and then spend the evening trashed and--hopefully--rich.

wish us luck, y'all. first show!

for those of you planning to buy it, the first new radio comic is gonna be out wednesday, oct. 5th.

SD: comic gallery will definitely have it; comikaze might.

PDX: cosmic monkey will definitely have it; excalibur and countermedia might.

we will also be selling sweet, sweet 11"x17" posters of the splash page on the site for $5 or $6. they're printed on SEXY-ASS near card stock paper.

1:11 am - sauce
well, we finally got our purchase order from diamond. way less than expected, way less than it needs to be to continue our relationship with them, but not so bad altogether. coming out of nowhere and being nobody is a hard sell. the good news is the comic is fucking good, so creating an awareness and an after-the-fact buzz will get us reorders.

having marcus in town was great fucking fun. i spent way more fucking money than i should've, way more than i've been spending, but we did a lot of great spots--even some new ones--and he got my brain spinning in ways it likes to spin. scary how alike we are.

i'm a few weeks away from finishing *the last island*, and i couldn't be more stoked. i've almost doubled my page count since con, and the new stuff is the real pith of the book. the story has dramatically changed from the original idea, and i long ago stopped trying to work from a finished plot. i've been making everything up as i go according to the base premise. it's been a blast. this one's gonna be way more fun than the suicide guy.

sorren and i will be in san diego this christmas.

9:49 am - YES YES YES
after eight months of deliberation and work, and after six long weeks of waiting, i have finally found out that my comic, *something so familiar,* is going to be fully sponsored by the xeric foundation and will be published inside of 2005.

not only that, but full-page ads for the group of grant winners will be put in previews, comic buyers guide, the comics journal and wizard--all on the foundation's nickel!

let there be new radio comics.

12:46 am - somebody buy me a beer
*something so familiar* is finished. my grant application goes out tuesday.

should have the book up on the site within a week or two, but maybe not. i'm fucking slammed with my other comic already.

if anyone wants a physical copy of *something so familiar*, consider this the absolute last chance you'll have to get one until i have it properly published. send me five bucks and i'll send you a xerox; otherwise there's no way i'm making copies for anyone. this shit is 46 pages--expensive to photocopy--and i need six copies of it just for my application.

man, what a rush, what a fucking rush.

i gave my presentation at school today. three seniors at a time were giving presentations on their spring thesis projects, and mine was packed. i talked about my island comic and how it's largely motivated by my frustrations with comics' ignoring its native properties.

i got such an exhiliration from the presentation and from the q&a that i'm beginning to realize how much i would love to publicly, professionally--even academically--talk comics.

wish you all could've been there. i fucking killed it. and now this semester is practically OVER!

9:01 am - VIC'S BACK
funny that even though i spend most of my time either at school looking at art or outside of school writing about it--the most compelling work i've encountered during this semester is the new megadeth record, *the system has failed*

yeah, fuck the last few, but dave mustaine, returned from a retirement caused by a terrible injury, is finally pissed off enough to throw down some real metal again. you can see our fair president on the cover of the record. . . .
